Development Features
Since its establishment, the College of Pharmacy has focused its development by following the nation’s policies which include advocating for the university’s social responsibility to work with the community, nurture talent, and the push towards social substantiality. Meanwhile, based on the support of promoting Taiwan’s Biotechnology and Medicine Industry, the College of Pharmacy hopes to continue its cultivation of professionals with both unparallelled skill and knowledge.
The development of the school will concentrate on the aspects of teaching, research, international development, student performance, and outstanding alumni. These details are as follows:
Teaching
- Starting in 2019, the College of Pharmacy changed to a five-year program. The core curriculum of pharmacy is compulsory, supplemented by four modular courses of clinical pharmacy, industrial pharmacy, business management, and innovative research and development.
- The Department of Fragrance and Cosmetics covers information about fragrances and cosmetics to refine professional knowledge in the development, preparation, data collection, analytical quality control, and sales of fragrances.
- Our college established the first Institute of Natural Products in Taiwan, which is a key scientific and technological development field. Rooted in chemistry and biotechnology, this institute strengthens the research capabilities and training of research methods to bolster top research talent.
- In addition, our graduate programs in toxicology are designed in accordance with the toxicologist certification system to cultivate toxicology-related professionals.
Research/Co-Op
- Our school provides a strong research atmosphere with a history of outstanding performance, especially in the fields of natural products, Chinese herbal medicine, organic drug synthesis, analytical technology, formulation development, nanotechnology, and fragrance related fields.
- We strive to integrate research and development facilities with platforms to manufacture new medicine as well as Chinese herbal medicine. Another key research area is to combine empirical pharmaceutical research with beneficial health related research as a reference for the formation of economic policy.
- In terms of industry-university cooperation, the School of Pharmacy assists the industry in establishing necessary new technologies and methods, including the development of new anti-cancer drugs and adjuvants, improving the extraction technology of raw materials, and providing drug quality testing services in addition to metabolite monitoring. It is our hope that this will attract investment in research and development technology to promote the improvement of Taiwanese industries.
- Research and development for the College of Pharmacy encompasses: pharmaceutical science, clinical pharmacy, natural medicine, fragrance and makeup, toxicology, and other related fields. In addition to its research in various disciplines, our aim for the future is to maximize our productivity through the integration of the four research centers of the college: the Research Center for Natural Products and Drug Development, the Center for Innovative Medical Biotechnology Research and Development, the Center for Health Economics and Policy Research, and Substance and Behavior Addition Research Center.
International Development
- In recent years, our college has actively promoted and encouraged students to participate in international exchange programs to expand their horizons. In addition to our sister schools, our college has signed a memorandum of cooperation and academic exchange agreement with the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy, Ohio State University, the University of Southern California, the University of California, San Diego, the University of Szeged in Hungary and Uppsala University in Sweden.
- The Natural Medicine Research Institute also conducts academic exchanges with Uppsala University in Sweden under our Global pharmacy course.
- In addition, our school has signed a dual-degree PhD agreement, which has improved the international visibility of our school and provided more international resources and cooperation opportunities for teachers and students.
Student Performance
- The School of Pharmacy’s Crucible Club is a student service club that edits and publishes the journal “Crucible”. It has been published without interruption since 1964. The content covers the pharmacy profession with special attention to humanistic care. In October 2004, the “KMU Crucible Society Proper Medication Promotion Team” was established to promote correct medication to prevent drug abuse among students and the general public.
- The Faculty of Fragrance and Cosmetics’ annual exhibition as well as the “Youth Design Festival” provide an opportunity to showcase the students’ achievements in the professional technology of cosmetics, planning, and marketing over the past four years.
Outstanding Alumni
- Since its establishment, the School of Pharmacy has nurtured countless students who have taken their place among society’s elites. Dr. Li Guoxiong, an alumni of our very first graduating class, worked at the University of North Carolina, which is ranked first in the field of pharmacy in the United States. He is also the first graduate of KMU to become a research fellow at the Academia Sinica. Similarly, many presidents of multinational pharmaceutical companies, senior executives of government units, directors of pharmacies in major hospitals, senior executives of academic units, and other elites of the pharmaceutical industry all call KMU their alma mater. Building on this deep foundation, the School of Pharmacy continues its excellent research tradition and cultivation of professionals with both unparallelled skill and knowledge.
