Set Yourself Apart with a Dual Degree

Current pharmacy students who have earned their bachelor’s degree can choose to expand their career opportunities with a dual PhD’s degree.
The College of Pharmacy collaborates with its in Chulalongkorn University(Thailand), its in Szeged University(Hungary) and its and the College of Medicine in Uppsala University(Sweden). Students participating in this program are only responsible for the payment of any necessary tuition fees to our home university.

Southeast Asia

The advantages of studying in Southeast Asia is the short flight distance. We collaborate with the oldest and the most prestigious university in Thailand, Chulalongkorn University, ranked #208 in the QS ranking in 2021。

The quota for participation in the dual Ph.D. degree program is a maximum of 2 graduate students per year. The duration of the dual degree program corresponds to no less than 24 months, and the student will have to spend a minimum of 12 months at each of the two universities Chula and KMU.

Requirement of students for participation

  • Having GPA (Grade Point Average) reach level B (or 3.0 on a 4.0 scale)
  • Completed B.Sc. with honours can apply to the program
  • Be admitted after an agreement between supervisors at Chula and KMU have been reached on a shared project and given notice to admission boards.

Credit Accumulation Rules

  • The credits should fulfill the regulations of  both  universities.
  • Lecture credits that transferred into  Chula  should not exceed  1/2  of the minimal credits for graduation.
  • Lecture credits that transferred into KMU should not exceed  2/3  of the minimal credits for graduation.
  • The students are recommended to take the rest of the lecture credits in their home university.
  • Lab credits associated with thesis should be taken following  Chula  regulations.

Dissertation Rules

  • A thesis written in English will be published and subsequently defended during a public dissertation performed in English at the home university.
  • The design and composition of the thesis, requirements for publication and availability should be made according to the regulations of both universities.
  • The dissertation grading committee will be composed according to regulations of both universities. As far as possible at least one member of the committee should be appointed from the partner university.

Co-published Rules

  • The dual degree program must result in at least one joint publications of Chula and KMU, one with the corresponding author from each of the two universities. The publications should be in internationally acknowledged journals with peer-review, and the Ph.D. students should feature as first author.
  • For student admitted to DDP, the requirement for the published papers is the total sum of SCI impact factors for related fields should be 3.5 or more. The students must be the single first author for these papers. The advisors from both universities must be the equal corresponding authors of at least one of the above papers.
  • Articles must be accepted for publication minimum three weeks before dissertation.
  • A thesis summary explaining and relating the state of the art in the field and how the research articles are contributing to the field.
  • Thesis summary and research articles must be published in English.

Tuition and fees

  • Be responsible for the payment of any necessary tuition fees to the home university. Tuition fees at the partner university are waived.
  • Do not have to pay credit or bench fees at the partner university.

Eastern Europe

Eastern European countries are famous for stunning scenery and well-designed infrastructure. Szeged City, also known as City of Sunshine, is a place where we can get to admire historical museums, art galleries, theaters, and other breathtaking architectures. University of Szeged, one of the most reputable universities in Hungary.

The quota for participation in the dual Ph.D. degree program is a maximum of 3 graduate students per year. The student will have to spend at least one semester at the partner university.

Requirement of students for participation

  • The student at the College of Pharmacy, KMU and the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Szeged.
  • Provide an English-language copy of master diploma, the student card, and an English-language examination certificate.
  • Needs to sign the “Agreement on Joint Supervision of Ph.D. Dissertation”.

Credit Accumulation Rules

  • The rules of credit point accumulation and course requirements will be set by regulations of the home universities, however, courses can be fulfilled at either of the universities.
  • A course satisfactorily completed by a student in the partner university should be certified by the supervisor with regard to duration, description, content and credit points. The credits of the course will subsequently be granted by the home university.
  • Research work performed by the Ph.D. student in the partner university must be summarized by the student in a report (2-3 pages) at the end of the residence, and confirmed by the host supervisor.

  • The dissertation grading committee will be composed according to the regulations of the home university, and at least one member of the committee should be appointed from the partner university.

Co-published Rules

  • At least one joint publication of KMU and SZTE in an internationally acknowledged journal should have two corresponding authors (each from both universities), and as far as possible the Ph.D. student should feature as the first author.

Tuition and fees

  • Be responsible for the payment of any necessary tuition fees to the home university. Tuition fees at the partner university are waived.
  • Dorm fees are paid by the host university, and travel costs between the two countries by air and a reasonable daily living allowance will be covered by the home university.

Northern Europe

Uppsala, the old capital of Sweden, is a significant industrial, military, and railway junction. Moreover, it is the center of culture, education, and religion. Uppsala University, a world-famous university in Sweden, is ranked #124 in the QS ranking in 2022.

The quota for participation in the dual Ph.D. degree program is a maximum of 6 graduate students per year, 3 from each of the colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy. The duration of the dual degree program corresponds to no less than 24 months, and the student will have to spend a minimum of 12 months full time studies at each of the two universities UU and KMU.

Requirement of students for participation

  • IELTS-test: Academic Module 6.0.; TOEFL-test: 550 paper-based test, 213 computer-based test, 79 Internet-based test or M.Sc. degree from a university with requirements corresponding to or higher than these.
  • All students under the dual degree program will have at least one supervisor from each of UU and KMU

  • The fundamentum of the thesis is minimum of four research articles (in exceptional cases three, then in very high impact journals), of which a minimum of two are published or accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • A thesis summary explains and relates the state of the art in the field and how the research articles are contributing to the field.
  • Articles must be accepted for publication minimum three weeks before the dissertation.
  • For dissertations at UU a formal allowance to defend the thesis at a dissertation must be granted by the committee for research training at Uppsala University (this implies fulfilled requirements regarding e.g. ethics approval committee and mandatory research courses).
  • For dissertations at KMU the total sum of SCI impact factors for related publications should be more than 5.

Tuition and fees

  • Be responsible for the payment of any necessary tuition fees to the home university. Tuition fees at the party university are waived.
  • Do not have to pay credit or bench fees at the party university.
  • Cost related to the dissertation will be covered by the university at which the dissertation is performed. If two dissertations are performed, each university will cover costs related to respective dissertation.
  • Financing requirements will be subject to the regulations of the home university
